What Happened to the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse?

Coastal erosion and heavy rains threatened the stability of the structure in 2017. It was moved to its present location on Trinidad Rancheria property in January 2018.

Why is it Important to Restore the Memorial Lighthouse?

The Trinidad Civic Club built the iconic structure in 1949, but it currently has no foundation and needs restoration. The historic purpose of the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse is to preserve the original 1871 Fourth Order Fresnel coal oil lens and the bronze 1898 Fog Bell--both important maritime navigational aids.

It is a monument commemorating those lost or buried at sea where future names will be engraved. The Civic Club provides generational continuity for grieving families by honoring those memorialized in an annual Memorial Ceremony.

Where is the Permanent Location?

The community was invited to participate in a Public Meeting in February 2018 to provide input on six sites proposed by community members. Based on site selection criteria, including cultural sensitivity, only one location was deemed viable—the current location in Trinidad Harbor.

What are the Design Plans and Costs?

The rendering depicts the two-level monument designed by Joshua McKnight of Trinity Valley Consulting Engineers. The layout features a trail at the back of the Lighthouse to the upper level with a sidewalk surrounding the 7’ foundation walls on the lower level. The lovely view from the site encompasses Trinidad State Beach, Pewetole Island and College Cove. The fundraising goal for construction is $390,000.
