What happened to the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse?
Coastal erosion and heavy rains threatened the stability of the structure in 2017. In January 2018, by the generosity of Trinidad Rancheria, the Lighthouse was moved to its present location at the Trinidad Harbor.
Why was it important to save the Memorial Lighthouse?
The Trinidad Civic Club built the iconic structure in 1949 for the purpose of housing the original 1871 Fourth Order Fresnel coal oil lens and the bronze 1898 Fog Bell from the Trinidad Head Lighthouse. The Memorial Lighthouse is now part of a Monument commemorating those lost or buried at sea and preserving maritime navigational aids.
What were the design & construction plans?
The two-level monument was designed by Joshua McKnight of Trinity Valley Consulting Engineers and constructed by GR Sundberg General Engineering Contractors. The layout features steps at the back to access the Lighthouse on the upper level. A sidewalk surrounds the 7’ foundation walls on the lower level. The lovely view from the site encompasses Trinidad State Beach, Pewetole Island and College Cove.
What is the status of the Monument Project?
The Monument was under construction from the summer of 2023 – 2026 and was dedicated on Oct. 12, 2026. The Trinidad Civic Club is the steward of the Monument and the Trinidad Bay Memorial Park at the historical site of the Lighthouse where marble plaques memorialize those lost or buried at Sea. Though the project has been completed, there will be significant ongoing costs due to the harsh environment for which a maintenance fund has been established.
